How to Replace the Asphalt Shingles on Your Roof

When it comes to roofing made out of materials like slate or wood, homeowners usually chose to hire one of the roofing contractors Atlanta for the job, because this type of work involves professional skills and knowledge. But many house owners now opt for asphalt shingles for their roof mainly because they are much easier to replace when they are damaged. So in case you decide to make an effort and replace the asphalt shingles yourself, here are a few tips about what steps to follow when you start the job.

First of all, any of the roofing contractors Atlanta will advise you to perform this repair on a day with moderate temperature, because the shingles will brittle and crack if it’s cold outside. On the other hand, if it’s too hot outside, then the shingles will become gummy and the nails will be hard to remove when you try to replace the damaged ones.

For starters, you must place a ladder against the side of the structure where the shingles are located and climb up the roof. For your own safety, you must also make sure the ladder is well placed and that it does not wobble when you climb. Then you must locate the shingle that is directly above the damaged one you want to repair. You first need to get the nails out because they are holding this shingle as well as the damaged one. After that you should carefully place the pry bar underneath the shingle right above the damaged shingle and then pry it upward until its four nails pop out fourth of an inch.

Right after that any of the roofing contractors Atlanta will advise you to carefully press down on the upper shingle until the nails remain sticking up. You should also use the back end of the hammer to pull out the nails, but don’t try to pull out each individual nail using the hammer underneath the shingle, because it may tear it apart. With the pry bar you must push up the nails on the damaged shingle and then press it down and pull the nails out using the hammer just like you did on the previous shingle. If part of the damaged tile comes loose, you might need to pull out one or more of the nails in the roof using only your hammer.

Now that the deteriorated shingle is loose, you can remove it and put the new shingle into place. Remember to tuck the top underneath the shingle immediately above it. The next step is to use the hammer to nail down the new shingle with eight nails. You must try to place the new shingle in the original position.

It is essential to be safe when you decide to replace damaged asphalt shingles yourself, because a fall off the roof can cause severe injuries. That is why any step you take while repairing your roofing must be properly performed, slow and deliberate. Taking the adequate steps when doing this type of job will result in a well repaired roof that has no leaks. However, if you do not perform these repairs in a safe manner, a roof with leaks will be the least of your concerns.
