Dos and Don’ts for Caring for Your Hardwood Flooring

Now that you have your new hardwood flooring installed in your home, the next thing that you should focus on is knowing how you can make sure that you will be able to keep the installation in great condition. Of course, floor accidents such as spills, drips and dents are quite difficult and sometime impossible to prevent, especially if you have little ones at home, having a party or you have your entire family spending the holidays with you.

What Causes Damage to Your Hardwood Flooring?

There are several possible ways that you can damage your hardwood floors, but to make things a little simpler, you can narrow them down into three general causes:

1.    Sunlight – this can cause wear and tear quicker than you think. The sun emits ultraviolent rays that could cause different levels of discolorations and fading.

2.    Dirt and Dust – collectively, all the grit, dust and dirt can get through the slats which can cause the quality of the wood to deteriorate. These can also scratch the wood’s pristine finish if not cleaned immediately.

3.    Water left to dry on the floor – well, this should not surprise you at all. Any type of liquid when left in a puddle on your hardwood flooring can seep through the graining and can eventually lead to the deterioration of the wood.

With the help of all these dos and don’ts, you will be able keep your hardwood flooring shiny, clean and if possible, dent free.

Don’t

•    Use water soaked cloths or mops to pick up spills and clean out stains. Wood absorbs water, and the more liquid it absorbs, the faster it will get damaged. If not cared for properly, the water can seep through the grains which will then cause the wood to rot from the inside.

•    Use rugs that have rubber linings or backings because they may react negatively with the wood finish. Aside from that the rubber linings can collect water and can cause molds to form underneath which can affect the wood.

•    Expose your hardwood flooring to solvents such as acetone, alcohol, alcohol based perfumes and even liquor because they can stain and dull the wood. Even oil based products can do damage to your floor, so make sure that oil splatters and spills should be cleaned immediately.

Dos

•    Clean your hardwood floors on a regular basis. This is to make sure that you will not neglect your floors.

•    Use clean and dry, soft cloths or mops for your clean ups to avoid scratching the surface or affecting the grains of the wood.

•    Use drapes or curtains to be able to control the temperature and the amount of sunlight that the hardwood flooring will be exposed to. Too much exposure to sunlight can affect the appearance of the flooring. So make sure that move your carpets and rugs around to keep the wood’s uniformed finish.
